A box truck is the cheapest way into for-hire freight with your own authority. No CDL is needed under 26,001 lbs, the truck costs a fraction of a tractor, and expedite and final-mile freight is steady. Here is the full sequence, in the order it actually has to happen.
How much does it cost to start a box truck business?
Excluding the truck, expect roughly $6,000 to $12,000 in year one for a single non-CDL box truck under your own authority: $300 for MC authority, $50 to $500 for the LLC, about $40 for the BOC-3, roughly $46 UCR, $4,000 to $9,000 for insurance, and an ELD. A used 26-foot box truck typically runs $20,000 to $45,000 on top. ELD HUB is $15 per truck per month with a $150 device.

Under 26,001 lbs GVWR — no CDL
A 26-foot box truck is usually spec'd at exactly 26,000 lbs so a non-CDL driver can run it. You still need a DOT medical card for interstate work.
Over 10,001 lbs — you are inside FMCSA rules
Non-CDL does not mean unregulated. Above 10,001 lbs GVWR in interstate commerce you need a USDOT number, hours-of-service compliance, and an ELD once you keep records of duty status 9 or more days in any rolling 30-day window.
26,001 lbs and above — CDL Class B
Heavier straight trucks, or a box truck pulling a trailer over the combined threshold, move you into CDL territory.
Decide the truck first
16 to 26 feet, liftgate or not. A liftgate opens up final-mile and retail freight and is worth the extra cost. Used 26-foot trucks commonly sell for $20,000 to $45,000 depending on mileage and box condition.
Form the LLC and get an EIN
State filing fees run roughly $50 to $500. The EIN is free and issued instantly from the IRS. Open a business bank account before any money moves.
Apply for a USDOT number
Free through the FMCSA Unified Registration System on form MCSA-1, usually issued the same session.
Apply for MC operating authority
$300, non-refundable, for interstate for-hire freight. Expect roughly 3 to 6 weeks from filing to active authority, including the 21-day protest period.
Get insurance quotes early
FMCSA requires $750,000 in liability for general freight; most brokers want $1,000,000 plus $100,000 cargo. New-authority box truck policies commonly quote in the $4,000 to $9,000 per-year range and can be financed with about 35% down. Quotes vary widely by state, driver age and experience — treat these as market ranges, not a price.
BOC-3 process agent
A blanket BOC-3 filing costs about $40 one time and has to be on file before FMCSA grants your authority. It takes minutes through any process-agent service.
UCR and IFTA
Register for UCR every year (about $46 at the smallest fleet tier). If you cross state lines above 26,000 lbs you also need IFTA decals from your base state.
Drug and alcohol consortium
Any driver operating a CMV requiring a CDL must be enrolled in a testing consortium with a pre-employment negative on file before the first dispatch. Budget $50 to $100 per driver per year.
Set up your ELD before the first load
Register with ELD HUB while you wait on authority: $15 per vehicle per month, no contract, 14-day free trial, and a one-time $150 PT-30 with the cable and free shipping. Plug it into the diagnostic port and pair it with the free app. Being ELD-exempt does not help you with brokers — most carrier-vetting platforms ask for a connected ELD before they release a load, and ELD HUB is integrated with Highway and Trucker Tools.

Not if the truck is rated under 26,001 lbs GVWR, which covers most 16 to 26 foot box trucks. You do need a DOT medical card for interstate operation, and the FMCSA hours-of-service and ELD rules still apply above 10,001 lbs.
If the truck is 10,001 lbs GVWR or more, runs interstate for hire, and you keep records of duty status more than 8 days in any 30-day period, yes — CDL or not. Below 10,001 lbs you are exempt from the mandate, but brokers and carrier-vetting platforms often still require a connected ELD before they will release a load.
Roughly $6,000 to $12,000 in year one for registration, filings and insurance on a single truck, plus $20,000 to $45,000 for a used truck if you are buying rather than financing. The ELD line is small: $15 per truck per month with a one-time $150 device.
Yes, by leasing onto a carrier that already holds authority, or by running under contract for a delivery network. You give up rate control but skip the MC filing, the $300 fee and the higher insurance minimums.
The LLC and USDOT number take a day. MC authority is the long pole at roughly 3 to 6 weeks including the protest period and insurance filing. Register your ELD during that wait so you are recording from the first mile.
