A DTC, or diagnostic trouble code, is the fault code a vehicle's engine control module records when a sensor or system reports a problem. Codes read from the same diagnostic port an ELD plugs into. On heavy trucks they appear as SPN and FMI pairs rather than the P-codes used on cars.

What DTC means

DTC stands for diagnostic trouble code. When a sensor reading falls outside its expected range, the engine control module logs a code and often lights a dash lamp. The code identifies the affected system and the nature of the fault — it does not, by itself, tell you which part failed.

P-codes vs SPN/FMI

Light-duty vehicles use OBD-II P-codes like P0300. Heavy-duty trucks on the J1939 network use a pair of numbers instead: SPN (suspect parameter number) identifies the component or parameter, and FMI (failure mode identifier) describes how it failed — short to ground, out of range high, no signal, and so on.

  • SPN 100 = engine oil pressure; SPN 110 = coolant temperature
  • FMI 3 = voltage above normal; FMI 4 = voltage below normal
  • FMI 5 = current below normal or open circuit
  • An active code is happening now; an inactive or stored code has cleared but was recorded

Why DTCs and ELDs share a port

An ELD plugs into the same diagnostic connector the ECM uses to report codes — OBD-II on light trucks, 9-pin or 6-pin Deutsch on heavy trucks. That is why plugging in an ELD does not interfere with a mechanic's scan tool, and why some telematics platforms can surface fault codes alongside compliance data.

What to do when a code appears

Record the code before clearing it, note whether the truck is derating or in limp mode, and check whether the fault is safety-critical. Codes tied to brakes, steering, or lighting can put a truck out of service at roadside, and an active fault found during an inspection lands in the Vehicle Maintenance BASIC.

Example

A driver sees a check-engine lamp and a derate warning. The shop reads SPN 3251 FMI 2 — a diesel particulate filter pressure signal problem. The code identifies the system, and the technician diagnoses whether it is the sensor, the wiring, or a genuinely loaded filter.
