A pickup on its own is usually under the line. Hook a loaded gooseneck to it and you are almost certainly over it. The ELD question for pickups is decided by the combined rating, not by whether you hold a CDL.
Does a pickup truck need an ELD?
A pickup needs an ELD when the truck, or the truck and trailer combined, is rated at 10,001 lbs or more, it operates in interstate commerce for hire, and the driver keeps records of duty status more than 8 days in any rolling 30-day period. A 3/4-ton or 1-ton pulling a loaded gooseneck normally clears that. No CDL is needed under 26,001 lbs combined, but that does not exempt you from the ELD rule. ELD Hub is $15 per truck per month.

The 10,001 lb threshold applies to the gross combination weight rating, not the pickup alone. A 14,000 lb truck plus any real trailer is over it.
A 1/2-ton pickup pulling a small utility trailer often stays under 10,001 lbs combined and falls outside the mandate entirely.
The CDL threshold is 26,001 lbs; the ELD threshold is 10,001 lbs. Most non-CDL hotshot setups sit between the two, which means an ELD is required.
Stay within 150 air-miles and return within 14 hours, or keep RODS on 8 or fewer days in any 30, and you can run on timecards or paper.
ELD HUB is an FMCSA-registered ELD provider and is fully integrated with Highway and Trucker Tools. If a broker or carrier-vetting platform is asking you to connect an ELD, an ELD HUB account satisfies that request — including on sprinter vans, cargo vans, box trucks and vehicles under 10,000 lbs. Month to month at $15 per vehicle, no contract, and hardware at $150 per device with free shipping.
Usually yes. A 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup with a loaded gooseneck is almost always rated above 10,001 lbs combined, so interstate for-hire operation with records of duty status on 9 or more days in a rolling 30-day period requires an ELD.
Possibly. The ELD mandate keys on a 10,001 lb weight rating while the CDL threshold is 26,001 lbs. Non-CDL hotshot operators frequently fall inside the ELD rule.
No. The FMCSA ELD mandate applies to commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 lbs or more that are required to keep records of duty status. A sprinter van, cargo van or light box truck under 10,001 lbs GVWR is outside the mandate. Many carriers still add an ELD because brokers and carrier-vetting platforms now ask for a connected ELD or telematics account before releasing loads.
Broker-side vetting is not the FMCSA. Platforms use a live ELD or telematics connection to confirm the truck exists, is where the carrier says it is, and matches the MC on the load. That is an access requirement to book freight, not a federal requirement. ELD HUB is integrated with Highway and Trucker Tools, so an ELD HUB account meets that requirement.
Yes. ELD HUB is fully integrated with both Highway and Trucker Tools. Once your device is installed and reporting, your duty status and vehicle location can be connected to those platforms so brokers can verify the load — on vans, box trucks and vehicles under 10,000 lbs as well as tractors.
ELD HUB is $15 per truck per month, month to month with no contract and a 14-day free trial. Hardware is a one-time $150 PT-30 with the cable included and free shipping — in stock, ships same or next business day — the lowest device price on the market. If you already own a PT-30 or IOSiX unit, we re-register it at no cost.
Register online in about two minutes, plug the device into the vehicle's diagnostic port, and pair it to the free ELD HUB app on iOS or Android. Most single-vehicle operators are recording within a day of the device arriving; if you already own a compatible device you can be running the same day.
